1. The very first thing you need to do is laying placemats on the table with dinner plates at the centre of the placemats. If the occasion is more formal, you may wish to use a tablecloth instead of placemats.

2. Next up, grab your new cutlery set from vidaXL. When you place the cutlery, you should always place your knives, forks and spoons on the table in order of use, and you should always start from the outside and work inwards with each course. Forks should go on the left side of the plate, while soup spoons and knives should go on the right side of the plate. The knife blades should face inwards towards the plate and spoons.

3. Naturally, you also need napkins on your beautiful table. With napkins, you have a bit more freedom. You could, for instance, place the napkins on the plates, underneath the forks, in the glasses or something else. 

4. Now, what about drinking or wine glasses? The ‘rule’ is that glasses should always be placed on the right side of the dinner plate. As a rule of thumb, you should place glasses approximately where 1 o’clock is situated on a clock face.

5. If you also have a salad plate and a soup bowl, these two plates should go on top of the dinner plate. If you have a bread and butter plate, it should be placed at 10 o’clock on the clock with a knife laid across the plate. A dessert spoon should always go above the dinner plate at a 12 o’clock position.

6. Now that you have all the basics down, you can start to play around a little bit. You may wish to add a few candles and some beautiful flowers to the table. A good tip is to not use tall flowers for your table. Instead, use centrepieces that aren’t too tall. This will look much better, trust us.

How to clean your cutlery set

Of course, you want to keep your brand-new cutlery set sparkling clean at all times. Luckily, there are many simple cleaning methods you can easily use to keep your cutlery set spotless and even restore them to their original condition. While our cutlery sets are designed to go in the dishwasher, sometimes you need to give them a good old scrub to keep them in mint condition. So, let’s dive into some of our favourite cleaning tips here.

• Start by washing your cutlery in warm, soapy water. You can do this in the sink or a big bowl. 

• Now, dry your cutlery with a lint-free cloth right after you’re done washing it. Drying your cutlery immediately after washing is our favourite everyday tip. Air drying your cutlery could leave ugly water stains that you don’t want. Also, a side tip is to at least rinse your cutlery before putting it in the dishwasher. This ensures no leftover food is on the cutlery, and it also removes any harmful acidity that could cause stains on your cutlery. 

• Never ever use abrasive scrubbers, as they can scratch stainless steel. Instead, use a sponge or a soft dishcloth. 

• If your cutlery needs to be brought back to life, our absolute favourite tip is mixing a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda with eight parts hot water in your sink. Simply let your cutlery soak in this mixture for about 10 minutes, and then rinse and dry your cutlery. If you don’t have bicarbonate soda, you can substitute it with one part vinegar.

Harness the power of baking soda and vinegar

Remember how we just said our favourite tip is using baking soda or vinegar for cleaning your cutlery? Honestly, you do not need any of the expensive cutlery cleaning products that are to be found in almost every supermarket these days. Both baking soda and vinegar are by far the most effective remedies - and they are cheap! Baking soda and vinegar both remove all the grime in just a couple of minutes. It will foam as it removes the dirt. 

If it stops foaming and you don’t feel that your cutlery is clean, you can pour another cup of boiling water over the top, as this reactivates baking soda and vinegar. You will truly be amazed at how wonderful baking soda and vinegar work.

How to clean silver cutlery

While most of us have stainless steel cutlery today, you may just be one of the old-fashioned people who have silver cutlery. At vidaXL, we love a beautiful cutlery set made of silver. It just looks gorgeous. However, silver cutlery needs to be taken a bit better care of than stainless steel cutlery. 

First and foremost, the dishwasher is not your friend when it comes to silverware. You should always clean your silver cutlery sets by hand. Please don’t be tempted by the dishwasher. By washing your silverware by hand and drying the cutlery immediately, you prevent ugly water stains. Remove food as quickly as possible, rinse the cutlery and then wash it in warm soapy water with a soft cloth or sponge. Lastly, we recommend that you store your silver cutlery in cotton bags to keep it clean for longer.
